No distinction between small and large islands in key projects, says president

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said the government will not differentiate between small and large islands when implementing key development projects, stating that all citizens are entitled to equal access to essential services.
The President made the remarks during this week’s episode of the President’s Office podcast, The Pulse, while outlining the administration’s approach to development and public service delivery across the Maldives.
“In my eyes, every citizen is equal. Whether a citizen belongs to the smallest island or a major city, I believe there are essential services that everyone must have access to,” President Muizzu said.
He said that while the government’s broader policy includes population consolidation, regional development, the establishment of urban centres and integrated development zones in the north and south, equal access to public services must remain a priority.
The President stated that citizens living on every inhabited island should receive services on an equal basis, regardless of population size or location.
According to Muizzu, a range of facilities and services related to healthcare, sports, education, waste management, banking and commerce should be available across all islands.
He identified police stations and police posts, fitness centres, waste management facilities and children’s parks as examples of infrastructure that should be established throughout the country.
The President also highlighted water and sewerage systems and harbour development as key priorities for the current administration.
“Completing water and sewerage systems on all islands, and ensuring a harbour with safe access on every island—we will establish all of these during this term,” he said.
Muizzu added that the government has already prioritised and scheduled development projects across the country. He reiterated that most projects are expected to be completed in 2027, with the remaining projects continuing into 2028.
The comments come as the government advances development programmes across the islands while pursuing broader plans for regional development and service delivery.
