Fulidhoo school staff member dies after sea safety class

A staff member at Vaavu Atoll School in V. Fulidhoo died on Tuesday after experiencing breathing difficulties following a sea-based class conducted on the island.
The deceased was identified as Aishath Aathifa, 39, from B. Kudarikilu. She worked as a support staff member at Vaavu Atoll School.
The session was conducted jointly by the school and police based in Fulidhoo for students, teachers and parents.
According to people familiar with the incident, Aathifa began making her way ashore during a break in the session. After reaching land, she complained of difficulty breathing and was taken to the island’s health centre.
She died while receiving treatment about 30 minutes later.
Police confirmed the incident on Tuesday.
Police said Aathifa’s body was brought to Malé for examinations and was handed over to her family late on Monday.
“Further matters that need to be examined in connection with the incident are being looked into,” police said in a message issued to the media.
The incident follows another death in Fulidhoo in April, when a father died after entering the sea while attempting to rescue his two children who had been swept away.
