Parliament has amended its rules of procedure to shorten the notice period for individuals summoned to appear before parliamentary committees from five days to three days.

The amendment was proposed by Ihavandhoo PNC MP Ahmed Naseer.

The General Committee of Parliament, which reviewed the matter, recommended passing the changes without modifications. The committee report was tabled in Tuesday's parliamentary sitting.

The amendment modifies Articles 180(d) and 180(h) of the rules of procedure. Under the previous rules, individuals summoned to provide information, clarify matters, or submit written responses were given five days' notice, excluding holidays. The revised rule shortens the notice period to three days, including holidays.

Parliament approved the amendment with the support of 50 members. Keyodhoo MDP MP Mohamed Nashid and Mahibadhoo MDP MP Ahmed Shakir participated in the vote, while other members of the party did not.

According to the committee report, the amendments aim to expedite committee proceedings, improve accountability, and enhance transparency in parliamentary work.
