
Parliament concludes first session; passes 9 bills

Parliament concluded its first session of the year on Thursday and commenced a two-week recess. The session, which began in February, saw the passage of nine bills.
As outlined in parliamentary rules, the legislative calendar is divided into three sessions annually:

First term: February to 15 May

Second term: June to 15 August

Third term: October to November
Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla announced the conclusion of the session and stated that he would begin his leave from Thursday.
In his closing remarks, the Speaker presented a summary of the session’s activities:

According to the Speaker, 77 percent of the total legislative work submitted to Parliament was completed during the first session. He noted that most of the nine bills passed were introduced in previous years and had been under committee review.
In addition, nine new bills were submitted to Parliament this year. Members of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) have previously raised concerns regarding the low number of new legislative proposals.
