Yameen says criticism of govt not driven by presidential ambition
Yameen criticised the government for what he described as a lack of proper management.
Former President Abdulla Yameen has stated that his criticism of the government is not motivated by a desire to return to the presidency of the Maldives.
Speaking at a barbecue event at the designated barbecue area in Hulhumalé Phase II Friday evening, Yameen said he continues to speak out due to concerns about current developments in the country. He said his focus is on addressing issues that, in his view, are affecting the Maldives and its people.
“I’m not speaking out because I want to become president again,” Yameen said. “I’m speaking out because I disagree with the injustices taking place and because I do not want to see the country deteriorate.”
Yameen criticised the government for what he described as a lack of proper management, stating that the impact of currency depreciation and rising prices are being felt by the public, while government officials are able to acquire multiple flats.
He said the public should not remain passive or accept a situation where only those in power live in comfort. According to Yameen, citizens should not feel like second-class residents in their own country.
Yameen said he continues to engage with the public despite facing legal proceedings. “I am still free despite the political charges against me. I am prepared to respond to any questions — not just in court, but in front of the people,” he said.
He described the People’s National Front (PNF), the party now supporting him, as a small party but said the turnout at the gathering indicated that the party's message was resonating.
He also urged the public to participate in the upcoming presidential election and to ask questions and verify the claims being made about the current situation.
“The most important thing we can do is increase the number of people who support our message,” Yameen said.
