Malé City Mayor Adam Azim has called for all stray cats in the city to be relocated to the cat shelter developed by the Malé City Council.

In a statement posted on social media on Friday, Azim raised concerns over the sudden disappearance of stray cats from Malé streets in recent weeks. Animal welfare advocates have alleged that some individuals may be harming the cats.

Azim stated that while the shelter was constructed by the city council specifically for the care of stray cats, it has since been taken over by government authorities, and privately owned cats have been placed there instead.

“The council established the shelter to house and care for stray cats. However, the government has not been transferring stray cats to the facility, and residents continue to face issues, including cat faeces in public spaces,” Azim said in his post.

He also referred to the issue as a matter requiring immediate action and criticised the lack of coordination in addressing the stray cat population in the capital.

Azim urged the responsible authorities to begin using the facility for its intended purpose and ensure that stray cats are taken in. He stated that with the shelter now available, there is no reason for stray cats to remain on the streets.
