The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been renamed the Environmental Regulatory Authority and will operate directly under the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, without a governing board.
According to the President’s Office, the EPA had previously functioned as a separate agency under the advice of a board. With the change, it will now be directly administered by the Ministry.
The President’s Office stated Tuesday that the decision was made under the constitutional authority of the President with two main objectives:
-
To align the agency’s name more closely with its core functions, as most of its work has been related to regulating environmental affairs in the Maldives.
-
To strengthen and expedite the agency’s operations.
The announcement has prompted concern among environmentalists, who say the change effectively dissolves the EPA and reduces its powers.
