The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has confirmed that contact tracing linked to a case of invasive meningococcal disease has been completed and no additional cases have been reported.
The case, involving a 24-year-old man who died from the disease, was reported in the Maldives on the 7th of this month.
According to a statement made by HPA to Dhauru today, contact tracing has concluded, and none of the individuals who had contact with the patient have reported symptoms. No further cases of meningococcal disease have been detected to date.
Invasive meningococcal disease is a bacterial infection that may develop into serious conditions such as meningitis and sepsis. It is more commonly found in individuals with recent international travel history.
Symptoms typically appear between one and ten days after exposure. Common symptoms include:
-
Cough
-
Headache
-
Red skin rashes or pimples
The disease spreads through respiratory droplets, making those in close and prolonged contact with infected individuals more susceptible.
The HPA continues to monitor the situation and advises the public to remain aware of symptoms and seek medical attention if needed.
