The Maldives Meteorological Service has reported that the heat index in some parts of the country has reached 37 degrees Celsius and is expected to remain elevated in the coming days.
The Met Office stated that this period is typically the warmest time of the year. Reduced rainfall over an extended period has contributed to the increase in temperatures.
According to data released by the Met Office, the northern atolls recorded the highest temperatures, with the heat index reaching 37.2 degrees Celsius on Saturday.
In Hulhulé, the temperature reached 35.1 degrees Celsius.
Lower temperatures were recorded in the southern atolls, with the heat index in GDh Kaadedhdhoo and S Gan at 27 degrees Celsius on the same day.
An official from the Met Office said on Sunday that the current conditions are expected to continue through the first two weeks of April.
“Rainfall is expected after this period,” the official said.
Authorities have advised the public to take precautions when outdoors due to the current temperatures.
