The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) on Friday issued a weather advisory warning of rough seas and strong winds linked to a low-pressure system forming to the southeast of the Maldives.
According to the MET Office, the system, combined with a low-pressure trough to the northeast, is contributing to the development of widespread rain clouds across the region.
The agency stated that strong winds and periods of heavy rainfall are expected over the next five days, particularly in the southern and central atolls.
The MET Office advised seafarers and those travelling by sea to monitor weather conditions closely before undertaking journeys.
Authorities said the weather conditions are expected to result in rough sea conditions in several parts of the country.
The MET Office also stated that conditions indicate an increased likelihood of the start of the Southwest Monsoon, locally known as Hulhangu.
According to the agency, an official announcement will be issued once the monsoon transition is confirmed.
