Travellers urged to exercise caution as weather worsens nationwide

Weather conditions deteriorated across the Maldives on Thursday as the Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) forecast heavy rain, strong winds and rough seas across the country.

The Met Office said rainfall had spread across the Maldives due to a trough affecting the region.

A White Alert has been issued from Haa Alif Atoll to Faafu Atoll, warning of heavy rain, thunderstorms and wind gusts of up to 40 mph.

According to the Met Office, heavy rain and strong winds are expected across all parts of the country, with sea conditions also expected to deteriorate.

The agency said weather conditions are forecast to be at their worst on Friday.

The forecast comes as many people are expected to travel to their home islands following the end of the first-term school holidays. Authorities have advised travellers to monitor weather updates and consider conditions before travelling by sea.

A Met Office official said weather conditions are expected to improve after Sunday.

"The weather will start to clear up after Sunday. Right now, conditions remain very rough," the official said.

"Therefore, we urge everyone to exercise caution during sea travel."
