President nominates Abdul Aziz Jamal as Information Commissioner
He previously served as Information Commissioner during the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has nominated Minister of State Abdul Aziz Jamal Aboobakuru for appointment as the next Information Commissioner and submitted his name to parliament for approval.
The President’s letter seeking parliamentary approval for the appointment was read during Sunday’s sitting of the People’s Majlis.
Abdul Aziz was the only nominee proposed by the President for the position.
The nomination has been referred to parliament’s Committee on Independent Institutions for evaluation before a vote is taken on the appointment.
Applications for the Information Commissioner post opened earlier this month as the five-year term of the incumbent commissioner, Ahammed Aahid Rasheed, is due to expire on 6 September. The application period closed last Sunday.
The Parliament Secretariat has not yet published the President’s letter, and the names of other candidates who applied for the position have not been disclosed.
Abdul Aziz currently serves as a Minister of State for Youth Empowerment, Information and Arts.
He previously served as Information Commissioner during the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen. He was the first person appointed to the position following the establishment of the Information Commissioner’s Office.
Abdul Aziz is also a former member of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and previously represented the Maavah constituency in parliament.
He received the National Award of Recognition in 2020 for his contribution to Dhivehi language and literature. He has also worked as a researcher and writer in Dhivehi language studies and has served in the education sector for more than 22 years.
His appointment as Information Commissioner will require approval from parliament.
