The President's Office has opened applications for the post of Information Commissioner ahead of the expiry of the current commissioner's five-year term next month.

Information Commissioner Ahmed Ahid Rasheed's term is due to end on 6 September. He was appointed to the post on 6 September 2021.

According to an announcement issued by the President's Office on Monday, applications for the position must be submitted by 12:00 pm on 16 August.

The President's Office said applications will be accepted on working days between 8:30 am and 12:00 pm, excluding public holidays.

Application forms and details of the required supporting documents have been made available on the President's Office website.

The vacancy comes after President Mohamed Muizzu criticised Ahid during his Independence Day address, alleging that the Information Commissioner, who was appointed during the previous administration, was acting under the direction of opposition figures.

The President's remarks followed a decision by the Information Commissioner's Office to fine the President's Office for failing to comply with orders to disclose information relating to the number and categories of political appointees.

The issue also comes amid public concern over the handling of requests for information under the Right to Information Act by government ministries and state-owned enterprises.
