President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said on-street parking will no longer be permitted on Boduthakurufaanu Magu once the current phase of the road redevelopment is opened to the public.
Speaking on the President's Office weekly podcast The Pulse on Friday, Muizzu said a section of the lagoon alongside Boduthakurufaanu Magu had been reclaimed to create a dedicated parking area.
According to the President, the new facility will accommodate around 500 motorcycles.
"Once completed, the side-of-the-road parking previously allowed between Nasandhura and Izzudheen Jetty will be banned. Drivers will have to park in this designated area instead," he said.
He said the change would improve traffic flow along the road.
Muizzu added that motorists would be able to park in the designated area and walk to their destinations.
He also said trees would be planted along the road before it is opened to the public.
The President said the next phase of the project will cover the section from the Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) area to Rasfannu Beach.
The Boduthakurufaanu Magu redevelopment project began in August last year and is being carried out in five sections.
The first section, from the Presidential Jetty to the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), was completed in early December. The second section, extending to the North Harbour, was completed between December and February.
The project was awarded to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) at a cost of MVR 144 million and is scheduled for completion within 455 days.
