Surveys begin for Malé, Villimalé road redevelopment project

Field surveys and technical studies required for the detailed design of the Malé and Villimalé road redevelopment project have commenced, the Ministry of Housing, Land and Urban Development announced on Tuesday.
According to the ministry, the work now underway involves collecting data and conducting assessments needed to prepare detailed plans for the project.
The exercise includes surveys within the project area as well as consultations with relevant stakeholders and government agencies.
The ministry said the survey and assessment phase is expected to continue until July 4.
The work is being carried out by a technical team from China under a grant assistance programme provided by the Chinese government.
The project entered the planning stage after a team of Chinese technical experts visited the Maldives in 2024 to conduct feasibility studies and gather information required for the proposed redevelopment.
At the time, the Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure stated that the team's work included site inspections, data collection and consultations with relevant stakeholders. Those feasibility studies were completed in November 2024.
The Malé and Villimalé road redevelopment project was formalised under an agreement signed during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s state visit to China in January 2024.
According to details previously released by the government, the project includes the redevelopment and resurfacing of roads in Malé using asphalt.
The programme will also involve upgrades to utility infrastructure, including water, sewerage and electricity networks.
In addition, plans call for the installation of a centralised fire hydrant system and improvements to the stormwater drainage network.
The government has stated that the project is intended to improve road infrastructure while integrating utility upgrades within the same development programme.
No timeline has yet been announced for the commencement of construction works following completion of the design phase.
