The Prosecutor General’s Office has filed charges against two Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) officers for permitting the import of food without a health certificate.

The case concerns the clearance of food shipments by sea and air in March. The officers are accused of issuing approval without the required documentation.

The motion was submitted to the Criminal Court today. The accused are:

  • Ahmed Hashim, Dhaftharu RS 9244

  • Ahmed Zahir, Arafaathu, Gdh. Thinadhoo

Both face three counts of improper conduct in the performance of official duty under Article 512(h) of the Penal Code.

Each charge carries a penalty of four months and 24 days in prison.

The Prosecutor General’s Office stated that it will not pursue a plea agreement. It said the offence concerns domestic food safety and breaches relevant laws and regulations, and that public interest does not support a plea arrangement.
