Maldives bans Hipp baby food over poisoning risk alert

The Food and Drug Authority (FDA) on Monday banned the use of the German baby food brand ‘Hipp’ in Maldives after action was taken in another country over suspected poisoning.
The issue arose after the brand’s products were withdrawn in Austria following concerns that they contained a harmful substance. Reports indicate the possible presence of a chemical used in fly control.
Police in Austria have begun an investigation and are removing the products from shops and markets.
In a statement, the Food and Drug Authority said the brand is not registered with the authority.
The authority noted that the products may still be imported, sold and used in Maldives. It urged the public and businesses to remain vigilant.
