The foundation stone for a 13-storey parking building in Hulhumalé Phase 1 was laid on Sunday.
The ceremony was attended by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, with the foundation stone laid by Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen.
The project is being developed by Batch Construction as a private sector initiative. The total investment has not been disclosed.
The building, named ‘Next by Batch’ (NXT), is planned as a parking facility. Construction is expected to be completed within two years.
According to project details, the facility will include parking for more than 800 cars and over 500 motorcycles. The design includes a helix ramp system for vehicle movement.
Speaking at the ceremony, Managing Director of Batch Construction Mohamed Saeed said the project is intended to address parking issues in the Greater Malé Area.
“The objective of this project is to provide space for parking of vehicles,” he said.
The building will include ramps and vehicle lifts. It will also include commercial areas for vehicle-related services, retail outlets and other uses. Charging points for electric vehicles will be installed, and both private and public parking options will be available.
The structure will consist of 13 floors including a basement.
Minister Ameen said the government plans to develop a total of seven parking buildings in the Greater Malé Area. He said the remaining six projects will also be awarded to Maldivian companies.
He said the facilities are intended to address congestion and issues related to parking requirements for vehicle registration.
Ameen added that a portion of the space in the planned buildings will be allocated for public service providers and persons with disabilities.
According to the minister, three parking buildings will be developed in Hulhumalé Phase 1 and four in Phase 2. The projects are expected to provide a total of 2,600 parking spaces for cars and 1,000 for motorcycles.
Further details on the project, including information on purchasing parking spaces, are available on the project website.
