Govt announces monthly MVR 9,000 allowance for Nov 3 soldiers

A total of 19 Maldivian nationals, including eight soldiers, lost their lives during the incident.

The government on Wednesday announced a monthly allowance of MVR 9,000 for the families of soldiers killed during the attempted armed coup in the Maldives on 3 November 1988.

The regulation detailing the allowances was published in the government gazette Wednesday.

The allowance applies to soldiers awarded the Medal of Honour for their actions during the attack by the Tamil Tigers in collaboration with Indian forces. The financial support will be provided to the surviving parents, children, and widows of the fallen soldiers.

According to the regulation, the allowances will be distributed as follows:

  • MVR 9,000 per month for the families of martyred soldiers (each for surviving parents, children, and widows of the fallen soldiers).

  • MVR 9,000 per month for recipients of the Huravee Gold Medal.

  • MVR 8,000 per month for recipients of the Huravee Silver Medal.

  • MVR 6,000 per month for those awarded commendations for bravery.

A total of 19 Maldivian nationals, including eight soldiers, lost their lives during the incident.

The allowances will continue until the recipient's death, and families must inform the Ministry of Defence within one month of the recipient’s passing.
