Sodiq officially declared winner of Hithadhoo North seat
His opponent, People's National Congress (PNC) candidate Ahmed Saeed, received 1,313 votes.
The Elections Commission (EC) has announced the official results of the parliamentary by-election held on Saturday for the Hithadhoo North constituency.
According to the results published by the commission, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidate and former Addu City Mayor Abdulla Sodiq won the seat with 1,375 votes.
The commission said Sodiq secured 51.15 per cent of the 2,730 votes cast in the election.
His opponent, People's National Congress (PNC) candidate Ahmed Saeed, received 1,313 votes.
The by-election was held to fill the vacancy created after the Supreme Court ruled that former PNC MP Mohamed Sinan had lost his parliamentary seat due to the non-payment of a debt established through a court judgment.
Voting took place in seven ballot boxes located in Addu City, Malé and Hulhumalé. A total of 2,730 voters participated in the election.
With the official declaration of the result, Sodiq will represent the Hithadhoo North constituency in the People's Majlis for the remainder of the current parliamentary term.
