Hithadhoo North result shows public wants freedom and sincerity, says Ghafoor
Ghafoor said the result reflected the views of voters despite what he described as extensive efforts by the government to secure the seat.
Interim Chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Abdul Ghafoor Moosa, has said the outcome of the Hithadhoo North parliamentary by-election demonstrates that the public wants freedom, sincerity and accountability from political leaders.
His remarks came after MDP candidate Abdulla Sodiq won the Hithadhoo North seat in Saturday's by-election, defeating People's National Congress (PNC) candidate Ahmed Saeed.
Speaking to Dhauru after the vote count concluded, Ghafoor said the result reflected the views of voters despite what he described as extensive efforts by the government to secure the seat.
"Today, the true stance of the Maldivian people has been revealed. This government left no stone unturned in its efforts to win this election. Yet our candidate won this seat by a significant margin," Ghafoor said.
"The people want to see freedom, sincerity and loyalty being shown to them. Things are now moving in that direction."
Ghafoor also alleged that MDP members involved in the campaign faced pressure during the election period. He claimed that some party activists received suspension letters from their workplaces while participating in campaign activities.
Expressing concern over the allegations, Ghafoor said employment within the state should be available on equal terms to all citizens and should not be influenced by political affiliation.
"They cannot act that way. This is the Maldivian state. Employment opportunities within the state are an equal right belonging to everyone," he said.
Ghafoor further stated that the MDP would not be deterred by such actions and would continue its political activities.
"The public has spoken. The message is clear," he said.
With Sodiq's victory, the number of MDP members in the current People's Majlis increases to 13.
Ghafoor welcomed the result and said Sodiq would play an active role in representing the party in Parliament.
