Govt appoints new DG for MBS; seeks more nurses
Given the difficulty of obtaining blood donations, the loss of usable blood has been particularly frustrating for Thalassaemia patients and their families.
The Maldives Blood Services (MBS) has appointed Ahmed Mausoom as its new Director General (DG), the Ministry of Health announced Monday.
According to the ministry, Mausoom brings valuable management and operational experience to the role, having previously worked at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
In response to public concerns about the state of services at MBS, the Health Ministry has launched a recruitment drive to strengthen the institution. Key appointments include:

The appointments and recruitment drive come amid growing public frustration over the deteriorating conditions at MBS. Patients and their families staged a protest outside the centre last Saturday night, highlighting critical issues such as faulty blood filters, which have led to the wastage of several blood packets. Given the difficulty of obtaining blood donations, the loss of usable blood has been particularly frustrating for Thalassaemia patients and their families.
Following the public protest, President Mohamed Muizzu visited MBS on Sunday morning to assess the situation and listen to concerns. He later toured Orange Hiyaa in Hulhumale Phase 1, where the government is planning to relocate MBS services due to the old, unsafe condition of the current building. Given the urgency of the matter, the President has decided to oversee the resolution of MBS’s issues under his direct supervision.
