Yameen says criticism of govt not driven by presidential ambition
Amid widespread reports on social media suggesting new age-related restrictions on vehicle licenses, the Ministry of Transport has clarified that individuals over the age of 60 can still apply for and obtain driving licenses for cars, motorcycles, and other vehicles, provided they meet the existing requirements.
The confusion began after reports surfaced on media outlets claiming that people over 60 would only be eligible for a "special license" limited to specific vehicles. According to these claims, the special license would apply to:
-
Motorcycles under 60cc
-
Automobiles
-
Island pickups
This led to public criticism that older individuals might be barred from driving other vehicles or that their current licenses would be revoked once they turned 60.
Social media was quickly flooded with criticism and concern.
“There are persons above the age of 60 who have their own cars, motorcycles, private vehicles. I don't think his license should be revoked because he has reached a certain age. I condemn this rule,” one commenter said in a widely shared video.
In response to the growing uncertainty, Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen issued a statement on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter).
“Under the second amendment to the licensing regulations gazetted today, there is no restriction on any person of any age group above 18 years to complete and take the prescribed examinations for temporary and permanent licenses currently issued,” the Minister stated.
This means that there are no new age-based limitations on driving licenses. People over the age of 60 remain eligible to apply for and renew licenses for a wide range of vehicles, just like any other adult.
The ministry also confirmed that there will be no changes to licenses already issued under the existing rules. All previously issued licenses remain valid.
