Defence Minister Ghassan Maumoon has stated that the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) will see several capacity improvements this year as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance national security.

The minister made the remarks at the graduation ceremony of the 71st batch of the Basic Training Course for new recruits, held Sunday evening at the Girifushi Training Centre.

A total of 115 recruits graduated from the course, including 105 male and 10 female personnel.

Speaking at the event, Ghassan noted that new recruits are joining the military during a significant period. He stated that since taking office on 17 November 2023, President Mohamed Muizzu has prioritised strengthening the country’s sovereignty and independence.

As part of this objective, the minister said efforts are ongoing to increase the operational capabilities of the MNDF. This includes the establishment of the MNDF’s first air command in the Maldives last year, with further developments planned for road and maritime defence capabilities during the current year.

The minister also urged the graduates to adhere to the law and uphold national interests in the performance of their duties.

In a related development, Turkey has decided to donate a missile-launching vessel to the Maldives.
