Police Commissioner Ali Shujau has confirmed that he has decided to resign from his position, following increasing public dissatisfaction regarding the investigation into the fall of Hawwa Yumnu Rasheed from the ninth floor of H. Fentenoege in Malé.
There has been widespread belief among the public that police initially provided false information about the circumstances of Yumnu’s fall. However, speaking to reporters, Shujau denied these allegations, stating that the investigation was being conducted according to established procedures.
The incident occurred on April 17, when 21-year-old Yumnu fell onto the roof of the adjacent H. Mitaz building. In connection with the case, Raud Ahmed Zilal, who was reportedly inside the building with Yumnu at the time, has been arrested.
While Shujau confirmed his decision to resign, he did not provide further details.
Public demonstrations have been taking place nightly in Malé, with participants calling for Shujau's resignation and expressing concerns over the conduct of the investigation.
The case attracted further public attention after it was revealed that Yumnu had attended a gathering at the building owned by Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen earlier that night. Reports indicated that individuals connected to senior government positions, including relatives of Minister Ameen, were present at the gathering.
Concerns have been raised over potential political influence affecting the investigation.
Yumnu is currently receiving treatment at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH). Initially placed on a ventilator, arrangements are now being made to transfer Yumnu abroad for further treatment.
