Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has submitted his membership form to rejoin the Adhaalath Party.

Dr Shaheem made the announcement on Friday via a post on Facebook, stating his intention to rejoin the party and participate in its internal elections scheduled for later this year to select a new president.

In the Facebook post, Dr Shaheem wrote, “I have submitted my membership form to Adhaalath Party seeking Allah’s help.”

Following the announcement, current party leader Imran Abdulla called on Dr Shaheem to resign from his ministerial post in the government if he planned to rejoin and contest for leadership within the party.

Responding to this, Dr Shaheem stated that there was no requirement for him to resign from the cabinet to contest for party leadership. He added that if elected by the party’s members, he would continue in the role based on the decision of the party’s congress.

Dr Shaheem was one of the founding members of the Adhaalath Party. He left the party in 2017 due to internal differences while Imran Abdullah was still the president. He later joined the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and contested the 2018 presidential election as the running mate of then-President Abdulla Yameen.
