The High Court has accepted an appeal to quash the remand order of Raud Ahmed Zilal, who was taken into custody following the fall of Hawwa Yumnu Rasheed, a young woman found lying on the roof of a warehouse.
Raud, who was reportedly with Yumnu when she from the ninth floor of H. Fentenoy, was arrested on April 25. This came despite police initially stating he had no involvement in the fall. The arrest has drawn widespread public scrutiny, particularly over the handling of the investigation.
His remand has been extended on three occasions:
-
April 30: 10-day remand
-
May 10: Remand extended by 5 more days
-
Last Thursday: A further 20-day extension
Raud’s legal team claims that the remand order issued on May 10 violates legal procedures. As a result, an appeal was filed last week to the High Court seeking to invalidate the Criminal Court’s decision. The High Court accepted the case earlier today.
His lawyer also stated intentions to challenge the most recent remand extension, describing the process as flawed and unjustified.
Meanwhile, Yumnu’s family held a press conference, asserting that she mentioned four other individuals were present in the house at the time of the incident—besides Raud. The house was reportedly visited at the invitation of Yusuf Yassar Abdul Gafoor, who is currently under a travel ban. No other arrests have been made in connection with the case.
