The governments of the Maldives and China have signed a Letter of Exchange for the design and construction of new office buildings for 50 island councils across the country.

The agreement was signed by Minister of Housing, Land and Urban Development Dr Abdulla Muththalib on behalf of the Maldivian government and Ambassador of China to the Maldives Kong Xianhua on behalf of the Chinese government. Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works Adam Shareef Umar was also present at the signing ceremony.

The project aims to provide office facilities for island councils currently operating in limited or deteriorated spaces. The selection of islands where the new buildings will be constructed was based on criteria announced in a policy guideline issued last year.

This initiative is part of a broader commitment by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to improve the administrative infrastructure for local councils.
