Abdul Ghani Mohamed appointed as Chief Justice
The position became vacant following the retirement of former Chief Justice Ahmed Muthasim Adnan on 21 July.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has appointed Abdul Ghani Mohamed as the Chief Justice of the Maldives.
Ghani’s appointment followed his approval by Parliament on Tuesday. He was sworn in at a ceremony held at the President's Office on Wednesday afternoon. The oath was administered by Supreme Court Justice Abdulla Hameed.
The position became vacant following the retirement of former Chief Justice Ahmed Muthasim Adnan on 21 July.
Prior to this appointment, Ghani served as the President of the Tax Appeal Tribunal. He has previously held various positions within the judiciary, including as a Civil Court judge from 2000, and later as a judge of the High Court from 2004, where he served as a senior judge. Ghani was also previously appointed to the Supreme Court bench.
His earlier appointment to the Supreme Court was made to fill a vacancy following the ruling issued on 1 February. He was later dismissed from the bench in 2019 after changes in the composition of the government and Parliament in 2019.
Ghani completed his LLB (Hons) degree in Law and Islamic Jurisprudence from Al-Azhar University in 2000. He went on to earn a Master's in Islamic Judicial Sciences and Sharia Policy from the Islamic University of Maldives in 2022. He also completed a Post-Graduate Diploma in Teaching from the same university. Ghani is currently pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy in Islamic Judicial Sciences and Legislative Policy.
