Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has announced his decision to contest the 2028 presidential election.

The announcement was made through former Alifushi MP Mohamed Rasheed Hussain during a meeting held on Sunday evening. Attendees at the gathering, held with Solih’s supporters, confirmed the decision to Atoll Times.

Supporters backing Solih's potential candidacy in the upcoming presidential election have been holding discussions in recent months. Mohamed Rasheed Hussain, Solih’s brother-in-law, has been one of the organisers of these meetings.

According to a participant, discussions during the meeting included Solih’s intention to contest the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s presidential primary and strategies for the party to contest the upcoming local council elections.

The announcement follows preparations by former President Mohamed Nasheed to rejoin the MDP. A welcome rally is scheduled to take place at Sultan Park on Sunday. Before his re-entry into the party, Nasheed held two meetings with MDP Chairman Fayyaz Ismail.

Nasheed had previously expressed interest in contesting the presidential election. During the last MDP presidential primary, Nasheed lost to Solih. After the primary, Nasheed remained in the party but became critical of the administration. He later left the MDP with his supporters and formed The Democrats.
