Ex-PNC registrar Shakeel appointed to Elections Commission

Former People's National Congress (PNC) Registrar Mohamed Shakeel was formally appointed as a member of the Elections Commission on Wednesday.
Shakeel's appointment follows parliamentary approval granted on Tuesday. He resigned from his position as Managing Director of the Maldives Hajj Corporation ahead of assuming office at the commission.
During a ceremony held at the President's Office, Shakeel took his oath of office and signed the declaration required for membership of the Elections Commission. President Mohamed Muizzu presented him with his letter of appointment.
The vacancy on the five-member commission arose following the resignation of former Elections Commission President Mohamed Zahid in May after the conclusion of the local council elections.
Shakeel was nominated by the President to fill the vacant seat and secured parliamentary approval with 51 votes in favour. Seven members of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) voted against the appointment.
Before joining the Elections Commission, Shakeel served as Registrar of the ruling PNC, a position he assumed in January. He also holds membership of the party's senate.
