Committee holds closed meeting on social media content, scams
Police Assistant Commissioner Abdulla Shareef, who attended on behalf of the Maldives Police Service, requested that the committee meeting be held in private.
The Parliament’s Information and Technology Committee held a closed-door session on Wednesday with relevant agencies to address concerns related to the posting of images and videos that go against general social norms, and the prevalence of scams on social media platforms.
The committee is conducting separate inquiries into the two issues. Representatives from the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and the Communications Authority were summoned for discussions during today’s session.
The two key agenda items were:
-
1-
Measures taken to address and prevent the circulation of photos and videos on social media that are inconsistent with general societal norms.
-
2-
Efforts to curb pyramid schemes, online gambling platforms, and other scam operations occurring on social media.
Police Assistant Commissioner Abdulla Shareef, who attended on behalf of the Maldives Police Service, requested that the committee meeting be held in private. He cited the need to discuss operational matters that may not be appropriate for public disclosure.
The proposal to hold the meeting in confidence was submitted by Henveiru South MP Hussain Imran Latheef of the PNC and seconded by Machangolhi North MP Mohamed Rasheed Ibrahim, also of the PNC. The motion was unanimously passed.
