The Maldives Journalists’ Association (MJA) has condemned the new media law, stating it undermines press freedom and freedom of expression.
In a statement on Thursday, the MJA said it regretted that the President ratified the bill despite opposition from journalists, media organisations, and international bodies.
According to the MJA, the law creates a politically influenced commission with powers to block websites, revoke broadcasting licences, and impose large fines without due process. The association warned this would lead to self-censorship among journalists.
The MJA stated that although the law has been ratified, journalists will not be deterred. It pledged to continue resisting the legislation and to work with journalists and civil society groups to challenge what it described as an unconstitutional law.
The association also declared it would not accept the law.
