The 17-year-old who died in a traffic accident in Malé on Sunday night has been identified as Yousuf Alsan, son of musicians Mohamed Abdul Ghani (Theyravaa) and Mariyam Ashfa.
The accident occurred in front of the Maafannu Bus Station when a speeding motorcycle collided with a jogging Maldivian and a pickup truck. Three people were injured in the incident.
Alsan was riding the motorcycle with a 16-year-old boy at the time of the accident.
The 16-year-old and a 40-year-old pedestrian, who was crossing the road on a zebra crossing, were also injured and are currently receiving treatment at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH). Police said both remain in critical condition.
Alsan was the only child of his parents.
A journalist at the scene quoted a witness as saying the motorcycle lost control and hit the pedestrian. One of the riders then fell under a moving pickup truck.
Footage circulated on social media showed two individuals with visible head injuries at the scene.
Police are investigating the incident.
