The Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works has announced plans to establish public works (general service) units in 14 islands across the Maldives.

The initiative is part of the government’s policy to decentralise service delivery and improve access to public works in each atoll.

The ministry stated that the islands were selected based on criteria including the absence of existing service units and the operational needs of the Atoll Councils. The newly designated islands are:

  • 1-

The ministry said the services provided by the new units will follow the same model as current operational units and will be implemented in coordination with local councils.

The ministry is currently undertaking administrative work to allocate staff and resources to the designated locations.

According to the ministry, the responsibilities of the new public works units will include:

  • Road repairs

  • Construction of sand roads

  • Land clearing and levelling for road construction in newly inhabited areas

  • Canal cleaning

The Public Works Services was first established on 21 June 2012, initially operated as a state-owned enterprise under the name Works Corporation Limited. It was later converted into a state agency under the Ministry of Housing.

Since the formation of the Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works during the current administration, the function has been brought under its mandate.

Public works activities also include:

  • Repair and maintenance of ports, bridges, and canals in different areas

  • Production of construction materials such as blocks, tetra pods, and revetment blocks

  • Development of football fields, roads, and ground levelling

  • Emergency support in the event of natural disasters

  • Mechanical workshop services for government use

  • Support for public works activities during government-organised events
