President Mohamed Muizzu has stated that Velidhoo MP Mohamed Abbas is not supporting development efforts in his constituency and that opposition MPs are showing more cooperation.
During his visit to Noonu Atoll, the President made these remarks while addressing residents of Fodhdhoo Island, which falls under the Velidhoo constituency. He said that although government projects are receiving support from local councils, there is no such cooperation from the area's Member of Parliament.
"In order to uncover the truth, I just want to say that I am not receiving any assistance from the Honourable Member of Parliament for the constituency. I regret to note that they are trying to obstruct things where [assistance] is not available," the President said.
He added that political differences should not affect the delivery of services to the public.
The President also remarked that Members of Parliament from the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) have been more supportive of government initiatives than Abbas, who represents the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA).
"In fact, the MDP MPs have a better way of doing things for the government. They are not involved at all. They are not involved in anything in their constituency and they have not reached me in anything. Other things are easier to do," he said.
He further stated that it is regrettable that the MP for the constituency is creating difficulties where support is lacking and called for greater responsibility and professionalism from elected officials.
Despite the challenges, the President said the government would proceed with its plans for the people without delay.
MP Abbas had earlier said he had not been informed of the President’s visit to the region. He added that he has been cooperating with the government in efforts aimed at public development.
