The Environmental Regulatory Authority (ERA), which replaced the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) this week, has opened applications for its top post.
The EPA, previously a separate agency with its own governing board, was brought under the Ministry of Environment and Tourism on Tuesday. The Civil Service Commission (CSC) announced on Sunday that it is seeking a Chief Administrator to head the new section.
Position Details According to the CSC announcement:
-
Applications will be accepted until 2 p.m. on 26 August.
-
The position carries a basic monthly salary of MVR 20,500 and a living allowance of MVR 15,000, totalling MVR 35,500.
-
Applicants must hold at least a Level 7 National Qualifications Framework (NQF) qualification in a relevant field with six years’ work experience, or a Level 9 qualification with four years’ experience.
The change follows amendments to the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) rules, giving the government and minister greater authority over decisions previously handled by the EPA.
Environmental organisations have expressed concern over the reforms, warning that shorter EIA periods could lead to inadequate assessments and that ministerial discretion may weaken independent review processes.
The highest post at the EPA had been Director General, a role currently held by Ibrahim Naeem. With the new structure in place, his position will lapse once a Chief Administrator is appointed to the ERA.
