A police constable previously released in a vape smuggling and drug trafficking case has been arrested again and remanded in custody.

Police Special Constable Mohamed Sajid Ahmed was arrested last month after a search of his residence in GDh. Thinadhoo led to the recovery of 191.92 grams of drugs. He was also accused of possessing vape products and selling them, including to children.

The Thinadhoo Magistrate’s Court initially released him on the grounds that he was arrested unlawfully. However, the High Court later ruled that the release order was illegal and directed that Sajid be remanded. On Thursday, the court ordered a 20-day remand.

During the High Court appeal hearing, Sajid admitted attending the swearing-in ceremony but claimed he had not taken the police oath. He also stated he saw nothing wrong in receiving a salary without having taken the oath.

The High Court noted that Sajid had spoken without hesitation or regard for the concept of justice. The court emphasised the need to strengthen the system to clarify the legal consequences of signing oaths and affidavits for those appointed to public office.
