The state has disbursed a total of MVR 28 million this year to five political parties, in line with provisions of the Political Parties Act.
According to the Act, political parties with at least 10,000 registered members are entitled to 0.1% of the state budget. The Elections Commission confirmed that the funds have been transferred to party accounts as scheduled for this year.
At the time the state budget was passed, five parties met the membership threshold. The distribution of funds was as follows:
-
PNC (ruling party) – MVR 13.3 million
-
MDP (main opposition) – MVR 8.5 million
-
Jumhooree Party (JP) – MVR 2.7 million
-
Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) – MVR 1.8 million
-
Adhaalath Party – MVR 1.7 million
In comparison, last year’s budget allocated MVR 44 million across six political parties, which included these five and the now-dissolved Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
