Hussain Fahmy, who was dismissed on Sunday as Managing Director of the State Electric Company (STELCO), has been appointed to a senior position in the President’s Office.
The President’s Office confirmed to Atoll Times that Fahmy has been named Principal Secretary to the President on Policy and Manifesto, a post with ministerial status.
Fahmy, who had worked at STELCO for more than 25 years, was appointed as the company’s Managing Director in November 2023. The government has not disclosed the reason for his dismissal.
He was succeeded at STELCO by Ahmed Shamah Rasheed, who had previously served as Managing Director of the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO). Shamah was suspended for more than a month during an internal investigation and was later dismissed.
MIFCO had also issued a letter to Shamah following complaints filed through the Privatisation and Corporatszation Board’s whistleblower portal, alleging misuse of company resources and violations of corporate policy. After leaving MIFCO, Shamah was appointed State Minister of Fisheries in May last year.
