Yameen accuses president of failing to deliver on promises
Former President Abdulla Yameen has called on opposition political parties to work together in holding the government accountable.
Speaking at a meeting held at the People’s National Front (PNF) office on Thursday night, Yameen criticised the recently passed media regulation act, which he said restricts freedom of expression and the press.
Yameen said freedom of expression is a fundamental right that is limited only to a minimal extent in developed countries. He added that preventing the public from speaking about corruption and theft committed by state officials in order to protect reputations is against international standards and principles.
He urged opposition parties to come together in addressing such issues.
“We encourage the MDP and the Adhaalath Party to talk about the wrong things the state is doing. We can come together to hold the government accountable. That is what all parties should do,” Yameen said.
Yameen noted that:
-
Parties may differ in ideology and philosophy, but have a shared responsibility to highlight government misconduct.
-
It is the duty of political parties to keep governments in check when actions harm the public.
-
If audits show wealth that does not correspond with declared income, or if details are omitted, such issues should be openly discussed.
He added that this should not be considered defamation, but rather legitimate criticism. Instead of restricting speech, Yameen said individuals should protect their reputations by clarifying the facts.
Yameen also mentioned names of ruling party MPs, including Baarah MP Ibrahim Shujau and PNC Parliamentary Group Leader Ibrahim Falaah, as examples in his remarks.
