President Mohamed Muizzu has said that if the people of Meemu Atoll Raiymandhoo decide to move to another island, housing will be built there within one year.

The President made the remarks during his visit to Raiymandhoo Monday as part of his tour of the atoll. Residents raised concerns about living conditions, with some in favour of leaving the island while others opposed the idea.

President Muizzu stated that any relocation would take place only after consultation with the people. He added that 80 per cent of the island’s population would need to agree before such a decision is made.

He outlined measures that would be taken if the people choose relocation. These include:

  • Construction of three-bedroom housing for every registered household on the island

  • Handing over of keys once the houses are completed

  • Completion of housing within one year of starting the project

  • Revision and increase of the current MVR 500,000 relocation assistance for families

The President said that the government’s policy is to align population with development, but that decisions would depend on the needs of both Raiymandhoo residents and the community they might move to. He also said his administration intends to provide basic services, including education and healthcare, to the people.

Raiymandhoo is one of the least populated islands in the Maldives, with an official population of 240, though only about 80 residents currently live there.
