Govt may allow return of 1-bedroom flats for reapplication, says president
President Muizzu said the matter had been discussed in earlier public meetings and that the government was examining possible solutions.
President Mohamed Muizzu said on Thursday that individuals who previously received one-bedroom flats under government housing schemes may be given the option to return those units and apply for housing under a different project.
He made the remarks during a meeting with residents of Maafannu held at Thajuddheen School. Several attendees raised concerns about being allocated one-bedroom units in earlier housing schemes.
One resident explained that she accepted a one-bedroom flat because she had no alternative at the time but now supports her mother and a 10-year-old son, and requires a larger unit. She noted that current rules bar those who already hold a government-issued flat from applying for two- or three-bedroom units.
In response, President Muizzu said the matter had been discussed in earlier public meetings and that the government was examining possible solutions. He also noted that the Land Act does not prevent the government from allowing applicants to release small plots or flats and reapply for new housing.
The President said the government is considering a mechanism that would allow recipients of one-bedroom units to return those flats and participate in future housing schemes. He added that a decision would be made in the coming days.
“I know the challenges involved. Leaving the one-bedroom flat and applying for land may be the correct solution,” he said.
Housing concerns were raised throughout the meeting. The President reiterated that the government aims to resolve issues related to housing projects before the end of his term.
