Ahmed Shaffan Mohamed, a 30-year-old lawyer, has become the first Maldivian to be awarded a PhD by the University of Oxford.
Shaffan, who graduated from London in 2018 on a Presidential Scholarship, received his doctorate on Friday. His doctoral thesis focused on copyright-related criminal matters.
He began his higher education at King’s College London, where he graduated with distinction. In 2019, he received the Presidential Special Award after achieving the highest grade in his course. He went on to complete a Master’s degree before pursuing his doctorate at Oxford in October 2020.
Speaking to Mihaaru newspaper, Shaffan said, “The biggest achievement I have ever achieved in my studies is getting into this course. Thirty-nine students have already started this PhD programme.”
Shaffan continues to run a law firm in the Maldives while pursuing his academic career.
He is the son of businessman Mohamed Firaq, Chief Executive Officer of Inner Maldives. Firaq congratulated his son publicly on social media following the announcement of the achievement.
