MDP national council backs joint opposition movement
According to the opposition alliance, the immediate objective of the joint movement is to advocate for freedom of expression and freedom of assembly.

The Maldivian Democratic Party National Council on Tuesday passed a resolution supporting the joint opposition movement launched by former presidents Mohamed Nasheed, Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and Ibrahim Mohamed Solih against the administration of President Mohamed Muizzu.
The resolution was proposed by former MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail and seconded by former Hoarafushi MP Ahmed Saleem.
According to the party, the resolution was passed unanimously by members present at the meeting.
The resolution calls for the MDP to formally participate in and support the joint political initiative.
Among the concerns cited in the resolution were:

Alleged infringement of constitutional rights

Alleged political influence over members of Parliament and weakening of parliamentary authority

Alleged erosion of judicial and institutional independence

Concerns regarding checks and balances and the decentralisation system

Economic difficulties, inflation and government expenditure

Restrictions on freedom of expression, assembly and the press
The resolution also referred to raids on media organisations, the imprisonment of journalists and the detention of protesters.
Fayyaz and Ahmed Saleem are both members of the committee formed to coordinate activities between the three former presidents.

During a press conference following their first meeting, the three former presidents stated that although their administrations had shortcomings, they believed democratic standards in the Maldives had declined under the current administration.
