Homeland Security Minister Ali Ihsan has said that the government is working to identify the connection between party drug use and mental health problems in the Maldives.

The statement was made in response to a question submitted by Galolhu North MP Mohamed Ibrahim during Tuesday’s sitting of parliament. The minister’s written reply was read in the chamber.

Minister Ihsan said that drug users face a high risk of contracting infectious diseases such as AIDS and hepatitis, and that the National Drug Agency (NDA) provides support to those affected in cooperation with IGMH and Hulhumale Hospital.

He said individuals undergoing treatment are provided with psychiatric assessments, symptomatic medical care and counselling.

According to the minister:

  • A treatment plan is developed for each individual, and treatment is provided accordingly.

  • The NDA collects data to determine the extent of the relationship between party drug use and mental health problems.

  • The agency shares information from drug treatment assessments and urine tests, including those conducted on individuals taken into police custody.

Minister Ihsan said that this data helps the NDA identify the types of drugs being used across the country. He added that the completion of the ongoing Drug Prevalence Survey will give a comprehensive overview of drug use trends and substances used nationwide.
