Senior State Counsel Faena Fayyaz, head of the Civil Rights Office at the Attorney General’s Office (AGO), and her husband have been arrested following the discovery of drugs in their apartment in Hulhumale.

Police confirmed that two people were arrested during a search conducted at an apartment in RainCrest, located in the first phase of Hulhumale, on Tuesday night.

According to information verified by Atoll Times, officers found 33 grams of drugs and an undisclosed amount of money inside the apartment. Police noted that the quantity of drugs found constitutes a trafficking-level offence under the Drugs Act.

Faena, who has worked at the AGO for 12 years, was appointed head of the Civil Rights Office on 26 November 2023, shortly after the new administration took office. She also oversees the Human Rights and International Affairs Division of the AGO.

Police have recently begun releasing the names of individuals arrested in drug-related cases. However, no official statement has yet been made by the Attorney General’s Office or the Maldives Police Service regarding Faena’s arrest.

Investigations into the case are ongoing.
