The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has summoned former Economic Minister and current MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail to appear before the commission on Monday morning in connection with a corruption investigation.

The order, issued on Thursday, directs Fayyaz to attend the ACC by 9:30 a.m..

According to the commission, the case concerns the payment of compensation to Swift Engineering, a company owned by former Thinadhoo North MP Saudullah Hilmiy The ACC alleges that Fayyaz, while serving in the previous administration, participated in a decision that led to undue benefit for the company.

The commission’s order states that:

  • Fayyaz took part in the Alternate Dispute Resolution Committee’s decision in 2019;

  • He allegedly misused his official position with the intention of providing an advantage to Swift Engineering;

  • His actions were contrary to the interests of the state.

In response, Fayyaz shared the ACC summons on X and denied the allegations. He said he had not abused his position or acted against the state’s interests.

Fayyaz further questioned the independence of the investigation, claiming that the current administration is using state institutions for political purposes.

“The past two years have been the period of complete dismantling of the state surveillance system under President Muizzu’s government. It is very clear to the people that those in responsible positions are carrying out what the President orders,” Fayyaz wrote.

He added that attempts to intimidate opposition figures would not stop the MDP from working to “build a democratic country and ensure people’s basic rights.”

Fayyaz also said the current situation demonstrates the need to amend the Constitution to restore the independence of state institutions.
