Maldives Customs Service has suspended Superintendent Ziwar Ismail over the alleged theft of two containers of cigarettes from MPL’s Heathrow port.
Four individuals have been arrested and 12 others have been banned from leaving the country in connection with the case.
In a post on X on Wednesday, Customs stated that Ziwar’s suspension is effective immediately. The agency said further action will follow the outcome of the investigation.
Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has also suspended its General Manager, Muaz Ali, for 30 days in relation to the case.

It was learned that two containers of cigarettes seized by Customs were stolen in late April last year.
At the time, Customs said the two 40-foot containers held 1,360 cases of cigarettes, amounting to 13.6 million cigarette sticks. Based on regular pricing, the duty was estimated at MVR 122 million.
