The first batch of doctoral students from the Maldives National University’s (MNU) School of Medicine has completed their internship programme.
Twenty students graduated from MNU’s School of Medicine in October last year after completing a five-year medical degree. The internship, which is required to obtain a medical licence, was carried out over one year at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
The internship completion ceremony for the first batch of doctors was held at IGMH on Thursday.
In a statement, IGMH said the group represented a new generation of Maldivian doctors ready to take on patient care and medical responsibilities.
“This is a significant step for the country’s health sector. The new team of doctors has gained hands-on experience in treating patients and managing emergency cases,” IGMH said.
The hospital also expressed appreciation to the medical specialists, health professionals, and assistants who contributed to the training process.
The School of Medicine was approved by MNU in 2017 and officially established in 2019 to provide opportunities for local medical education. The first batch of students began their studies that year.
With this cohort, two batches of medical students have now graduated. The second batch, comprising 24 students, is currently undergoing internship training.
